Hi, I’m Ilgaz Mehmetoğlu, a third-year Computer Science student at Maastricht University. This page is a small record of the software I build and the subjects I’m learning, including bioinformatics.
I enjoy desktop applications, developer tools, and experimental software. I’m especially drawn to clear architecture, useful tests, local-first data, and interfaces that feel pleasant to work with.
1 About
I like software with a clear job to do. So far, I’ve worked mostly on standalone applications, creative tools, developer utilities, and engine systems. I care about dependable behaviour, replaceable components, useful tests, and interfaces that respect the user’s attention.
Lately I’ve been looking at how those interests could fit into bioinformatics and scientific software.
2 Bioinformatics direction
What interests me most is the practical side of the field: reproducible analysis, careful validation, clear provenance, and research tools whose behaviour people can understand.
2.1 Current interests
- Biological sequence analysis and annotation

2.2 Currently learning
Bioinformatics fundamentals, biological sequence analysis, computational biology, and the statistics required to interpret biological data. I’m putting that learning into practice through Haplux, my first substantial bioinformatics project.
3 Selected projects
Haplux is my first substantial bioinformatics project. The other projects show the wider engineering background I bring to scientific software: modular systems, complex interfaces, local data, tooling, and cross-platform delivery.
Haplux [pre-alpha, bioinformatics]
A reference-neutral research tool for testing whether a genomic model’s predicted effect for the same focal variant remains stable across different human haplotype backgrounds. It reconstructs phased haplotypes from indexed FASTA and VCF/BCF data, builds matched REF/ALT experiments, retains sequence provenance, and exposes the same analysis engine through a terminal interface and machine-readable JSON workflows.
